(sub)mm Validation Standard Antenna (VAST)

Spacecraft Mass: 50 kg

Orbital Altitude: ground

Launch Date: 2023

The (sub)mmVAST antenna features high mechanical and dimensional stability even at cryogenic temperatures close to absolute zero (4K).

Expertise provided by Space Structures GmbH team:

  • Detailed antenna frame structural subsystem design
  • Mechanical simulations (stiffness, weight, size, handling, mechanical stability analysis)
  • Sample development, fabrication, and testing
  • Thermo-mechanical analysis (stability, thermo-elastic distortions (20ºC, 77K, 4K), alignment)
  • Manufacturing and assembly of the antenna frame structural subsystem

The (sub)mmVAST reference antenna will be used in top European test labs for measuring between 86 GHz and 1.2 THz. It measures 900 x 250 x 400 mm and weighs nearly 50 kg.
